The Falkland Islands

The Falklands conflict was fought in 1982 between Argentina and the United Kingdom over the disputed Falkland Islands, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. The conflict was triggered by the occupation of South Georgia by Argentina on 19 March 1982, followed by the occupation of the Falklands and ended when Argentina surrendered on 14 June 1982. War was not actually declared by either side. The initial invasion was considered by Argentina as the re-occupation of its own territory, by Britain as an invasion of a British overseas territory and the most recent invasion of British territory by a foreign power.
During the battles many ships were lost. Triton plan locate and dive many of these ships of war.
Simon Campbell will be leading this expedition, having made an exploratory visit there in January 2008 and successfully locating the previously un-dived Argentinean supply ship Buonos Concardinia, sunk by British Harriers in the conflict.
Sit in on the negotiations with the UK and Falklands governments as the Triton team seeks permission to survey the war graves of the British vessels lost in the fierce battles. Watch as the Triton team wrestles with the logistics of setting up exploratory diving in the very remote location of East Falkland, battling against the cold, fierce tidal streams and notorious, horrific weather of the South Atlantic.
Share in the experience through underwater footage of the previously un-dived warships and supply vessels.
This expedition will ignite international controversy as many of the participants of the war are still alive, resolute in their belief that that they were right and are passionate about the events acted out in those four months in 1982.
